Dave travelled to Norway many times, particularly before, during and after the International Polar Year 2007-2008. Dave and Mary Lou travelled from Switzerland to Norway at least twice in 2017. At almost 70N, but with a relatively mild climate, Tromsø promotes itself as 'Paris of the North'. Dave often visited Norwegian Polar Institute and University of Tromsø. From Tromsø one can explore the Lofoten Islands or fly far north to Svalbard.
At almost 80N, Svalbard represents one the farthest north places one can visit. Norway operates an eduation and research center at Longyearbyen and an important international research base at Ny-Ålesund. We visited an abandoned coal-mining town.
